Oil & Gas Title Services

One of the main services CCJ provides to its clients in the oil and gas area in Ohio is the firm’s title work.

Whether working with landowners, producers, or oil companies, title work is a key issue because one can only lease the rights that one has in the property. CCJ has a long history of performing title work in residential, commercial and oil and gas transactions. This work is often done in conjunction with CCJ’s affiliated title agency, The Heartland Title Agency, Ltd. The Heartland staff and CCJ attorneys are all well-versed in the nuances of property rights. When combining that title history with the experienced oil and gas attorneys at the firm, CCJ has a potent combination of experience that is virtually unmatched in Ohio.

With the rising interest in oil and gas leases, CCJ has hired additional attorneys whose main focus is researching the title history of the particular parcels at issue. Those attorneys spend most of their days on the road gathering documents at various county recorder’s offices. The attorneys then review all the documents and trace the chain of title to the current landowners and leaseholders. Dedicated staff then assist in the review and preparation of the title reports for each parcel. Then, an experienced oil and gas attorney does a final review and inspection of each report to ensure its accuracy.

Those same forces work with our oil and gas litigation attorneys when there is a dispute between parties as to who have competing interests in the property or the oil and gas rights. We are beginning to see lawsuits regarding who has the authority and the right to enter into a new oil and gas lease. With recent emphasis on the Marcellus and Utica Shale formations in Ohio, the stakes have never been higher. CCJ is doing extensive work to verify which party has the deep rights to any land.

Finally, CCJ is working with oil companies who have already negotiated with Ohio landowners and assisting those companies with verifying the leases and rights associated with those leases are valid. This work is highly detailed and required to establish final drilling sites and horizontal drilling locations. When there is a defect, CCJ works with its clients to cure any title defects.

Because of the affiliation and close working relationship with Heartland Title, CCJ not only has more experience than many other law firms, CCJ can streamline the processes involved with title searches because the firm does not have to work with and pay for an outside company. This makes CCJ an attractive option when deciding which law firm or title company you should choose for your oil and gas needs.
