Litigation

Litigation usually occurs when people, businesses or governmental agencies cannot resolve a dispute with another on their own and one of the parties asks that a judge, or a jury, help them resolve those differences. These disputes, or lawsuits, require skilled lawyers who are intimately familiar with complicated Rules of Civil Procedure and Rules of Evidence in order to prepare, present and defend against the claims that will be presented to a judge or a jury. Lawsuits can be asserted in the state court system or in the federal court system. Often lawsuits are resolved before the claims are presented to a judge or jury through negotiation and other alternative dispute resolution techniques commonly known as mediation, arbitration and summary trials.
