Accounting Manager – Wooster

Critchfield, Critchfield & Johnston, Ltd. is seeking an experienced Accounting Manager to oversee the firm’s financial operations and lead our accounting team in its Wooster, Ohio office. The role is critical to ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency across all accounting and finance functions while partnering closely with firm leadership to support strategic and financial goals.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Operations

  • Oversee daily accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, payroll coordination, and general ledger.
  • Ensure accurate and timely month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closings.
  • Prepare and review financial statements, management reports, and partner reporting.
  • Manage cash flow, forecasting, and working capital.
  • Lead firm budgeting, variance analysis, and financial planning.
  • Oversee firm 401(k) and profit-sharing plans in coordination with third-party administrators and advisors.
  • Manage firm non-personnel insurance programs, including professional liability (E&O), employment practices liability (EPLI), cyber liability, and other business insurance coverage.

Trust Accounting & Compliance

  • Manage client trust/IOLTA accounts in compliance with state bar rules and ethical requirements.
  • Ensure proper segregation and reconciliation of trust accounts.
  • Prepare for and support audits, tax filings, and regulatory reviews.
  • Maintain internal controls and accounting policies.

Billing & Revenue Management

  • Oversee time and billing processes, rate management, write-ups/downs, and collections.
  • Partner with attorneys and leadership to improve billing and collection cycles.
  • Monitor realization, utilization, and profitability metrics.

Required Skills & Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting.
  • In-depth understanding of law firm accounting and trust/IOLTA requirements.
  • Advanced Excel skills and financial systems proficiency.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • High level of integrity, discretion, and attention to detail.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • CPA and/or MBA preferred.
  • 5–10+ years of progressive accounting experience; law firm or professional services experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience with trust accounting and legal billing systems is highly preferred.
