Critchfield, Critchfield & Johnston is pleased to announce that Sangwoo (Sam) Kim has joined the firm as an Associate Attorney in the Wooster office, where he will focus on the firm’s corporate and real estate practices with a particular emphasis on tax‑related matters.
Sam brings a strong analytical background shaped by his experience in the Circuit Court of Cook County, where he served as a Judicial Law Clerk in the Tax and Miscellaneous section. In that role, he worked closely with Judges John A. Simon and Daniel P. Duffy, analyzing complex statutory authority and drafting judicial orders across a wide range of civil matters.
He also gained valuable transactional and municipal experience through legal roles with the Chicago Transit Authority and the City of Chicago, where he managed statutory and procedural compliance and supported key operational functions.
Sam earned his LL.M. in Taxation with Honors from Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, along with a Certificate in Corporate Tax, and served as a Staff Editor for The Tax Lawyer. He received his J.D. from the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law, where he worked as a Student Attorney in the UIC Pro Bono Litigation Clinic, and holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of Illinois Urbana‑Champaign.
Before beginning his legal career, Sam served as a Sergeant and squad leader in the Republic of Korea Army, an experience that strengthened his leadership skills and commitment to service.
Outside the office, Sam enjoys running, reading, and exploring world history. He and his wife, Jessica, stay busy keeping up with their young son, Roy.
